Description:
This project required rethinking of the design and bringing new life to a Shepherds Hut, a classic example of small space living. Key drivers of this project were converting the space into an adaptable rural retreat, focusing on spatial efficiency, material restraint, and comfortable inhabitancy.
The primary intervention after the storage / cooking bench was a bespoke counterweight mechanism that enables the bed-to-table transformation, allowing the space to shift between resting and living configurations with minimal effort. The system is designed to be intuitive in operation, prioritising ease of use and accessibility for any occupant.
The steps were in dire condition after years of being exposed the rural elements, so were needed to be rebuilt. The original metal work was reused to ensure the new additions felt connected to the original design. The decision to use shipwrights’ rope and a brass fixing for the external handle felt in keeping with the original huts materiality and was praised as an unexpected addition by the client
