Description:
This project involved the redesign of a previously approved glazed link, reducing its scale and reworking the proposal to align with both construction constraints and the client’s evolving brief. The original scheme proposed a fully glazed corridor; however, logistical challenges particularly the installation of large-format glazing within a constrained site prompted a shift toward a more compact intervention using conventional construction methods.
A key driver of the revised design was the preservation of a framed view from the stair, looking out toward the adjacent churchyard and across the wider dales landscape. The stair was reconfigured to move through the space in a controlled sequence, negotiating existing openings and structural constraints while maintaining the approved roofline. Resolving this geometry balancing circulation, sight lines, and planning limitations formed the primary technical challenge of the project.
The material strategy adopts a deliberately contrasting approach in relation to the existing stone fabric. A palette of thin-framed metal windows and doors, combined with folded metal roof cladding, introduces a more contemporary expression while remaining robust enough to withstand the exposed North Yorkshire climate. The language draws subtly from the agricultural buildings of the surrounding context, allowing the extension to sit in dialogue with both the immediate historic fabric and the wider rural landscape.
