Description:
Bakethin Hide is a wildlife observation structure located within Bakethin Nature Reserve at Kielder Water & Forest Park, developed through the Kielder Art & Architecture programme in collaboration with Kielder Water & Forest Park Development Trust, Northumberland Wildlife Trust, and Northumbrian Water.
The project was delivered over a two-year period by a nine-person student team from the University of Newcastle School of Architecture through a live design–build process. The scheme evolved iteratively, informed by continuous dialogue with project partners, ecologists, volunteers, technical staff, and academic tutors. This process ensured that environmental sensitivity, operational requirements, and user experience were embedded throughout the development of the design.
The final proposal comprises two interconnected timber hexagonal pods a ‘lake view’ and a ‘forest view’ strategically positioned to frame distinct relationships with the surrounding landscape, including the upper reservoir, osprey nesting areas, and adjacent woodland. Despite their vertical offset, both spaces are fully accessible, with an inclusive design approach ensuring equivalent spatial and visual experience for all users.
The project was realised through a hands-on construction process, with a strong emphasis on prefabrication, concise timber joinery, and carefully sequenced assembly. Components were resolved for off-site fabrication and efficient on-site installation, requiring close coordination between detailing, material tolerances, and build sequence to translate design intent into a precise constructed outcome.
